Statement of the Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day

27 Януари 2023 г.

Today we mark the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The morning of 27 January brought freedom to nearly 7,000 people, but before that over a million had lost their lives in the death camp.

On this day we remember the 6 million victims of the Holocaust, victims of hatred and prejudice.

The millions of lives lost cannot and must not be forgotten. History must be remembered so that its mistakes are not repeated. We can do it because we have tremendous power and it is within ourselves.

Our nation should be proud of the example it set 80 years ago of humanity, tolerance, dignity and courage.

During World War II, the Bulgarian people did not surrendered their Jews and did not allow any of them to be deported to the death camps.

The Association of Prosecutors in Bulgaria and the Chamber of Investigators in Bulgaria mark the 80th Anniversary of the Rescue of all Bulgarian Jews with an initiative to build a monument and hold an international conference together with SU "St. Kliment Ohridski", dedicated to the role of the Bulgarian Righteous and jurists in this noble cause.

In the year of this anniversary, the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Bulgaria will continue to work against the anti-democratic and anti-Semitic manifestations that undermines our image as a nation, such as Lukovmarsh. Let us all work together in the name of the national interest!

Nothing is forgotten and will not be forgotten!
