Today, 13 October 2023, Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov met with representatives of the Monitoring Group of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE).
MEPs Clare Daly, Eric Marquardt and Elena Yoncheva also took part in the delegation from the European Parliament, headed by MEP Sofia in 't Veld. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prosecutor General Maria Pavlova, Administrative Head of Sofia City Prosecutor's Office Iliana Kirilova and Deputy Head of Sofia City Prosecutor's Office Hristo Krastev.
The reform of the Prosecution was discussed during the conversation in the context of the expected changes to the Constitution, including the risks which would lead to the increase of political influence over the independence of the judiciary. The discussion emphasized on the criticisms of the presented project from the entire magistrate community, academic circles, non-governmental organizations, as well as from the European Commission for Democracy through Law at the Council of Europe (Venice Commission).
Acting Prosecutor General got acquainted the representatives of the European Parliament on the disciplinary proceedings initiated against magistrates aimed at improving the organization of work at the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Bulgaria.
