Countering illegal migration was discussed at a working meeting between the heads of the prosecutor's office, the Ministry of the Interior, the Customs Agency and representatives of the UK's National Crime Agency

Today, 27.06.2023 under the leadership of the Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov in the framework of a working meeting at the Palace of Justice in Sofia, countering illegal migration was discussed.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary General of the Ministry of the Interior Petar Todorov, Heads of national services in the Ministry of the Interior, representatives of the leadership of the Customs Agency, as well as Chris Farrimond and Craig Turner from the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the United Kingdom. Maria Pavlova, Deputy Prosecutor General, also participated on behalf of the Prosecutor's Office.

The Prosecutor General stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to stop the migrant pressure on the EU countries and the UK. Borislav Sarafov emphasized that together with the Turkish side the Bulgarian authorities are determined "to close the borders to illegal migrants".

The focus of the discussion was also on the need to update the legislation to allow for more severe and effective penalties for the organizers and participants in illegal channels for migrant smuggling.

Representatives of the Bulgarian and British law enforcement agencies committed to strengthen their cooperation in the fight against cross-border organized crime.
