The leadership of the Prosecutor’s Office discussed with representatives of Rainbow Hub project the need for legislative reforms to prosecute hate crimes

The Prosecutor General of the Republic of Bulgaria Ivan Geshev held a working meeting with representatives of Rainbow Hub in Bulgaria. The meeting was attended by the Deputies of the Prosecutor General Daniela Masheva, Krassimira Filipova and Plamena Tsvetanova, the Spokesperson of the Prosecutor General Siyka Mileva and Iliana Kirilova, Head of Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office.

The leadership of the Prosecutor's Office discussed the need for legislative reforms to prosecute hate crimes with representatives of Rainbow Hub Gloria Filipova, Manuela Popova, Lilia Dragoeva and Dimitar Bogdanov, as well as with lawyer Silvia Petkova.

Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev informed the representatives of Rainbow Hub that after the constitution of the 47th National Assembly, the Prosecutor's Office plans to present a package of expert proposals for amendments in the Penal Code. Ivan Geshev and representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office discussed the violation and attacks on representatives of the Rainbow Hub, emphasizing that such acts, in addition to being criminal in nature, are incompatible with the principles of human rights protection in a European Union Member State.

Administrative Head of Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, Iliana Kirilova, expressed confidence in the speedy completion of the investigation of the attack at Rainbow Hub, the first community LGBTI center in Bulgaria, managed by the GLAS Foundation and Bilitis Foundation. The leadership of the Prosecutor’s Office expressed the readiness of the institution to act quickly in other identical cases, in order to limit this type of crime, violating basic democratic principles in the European community.
