Today, October 26, 2020, a videoconference meeting was held between the European Prosecutor General Ms Laura Koveshi and Ms Krassimira Filipova, Deputy Prosecutor General at the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor's Office.
During the meeting, initiated by Ms Coveschi, the functioning of the European Prosecutor's Office and the number of European delegated prosecutors who will work in Bulgaria were discussed. Ms Filipova declared the position of theProsecutor General Mr Ivan Geshev, expressed also in his previous videoconference meeting with Ms Kjoveshi, held in June this year that two European delegated prosecutors will be insufficient given the volume of the forthcoming work.
The Deputy Prosecutor General shared her expectations with Ms Koveshi that the National Assembly will soon adopt the amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) and the Judicial System Act (JSA), which will bring the national legal framework in line with the activities of the European Public Prosecutor's Office. The amendments define the status and powers of the European Delegated Prosecutors, ensuring their independence in the exercise of the functions under the authority and supervision of investigations within the competence of the European Public Prosecutor's Office.
The Deputy Prosecutor General Krassimira Filipova reiterated the principled position of the Prosecutor General in supporting the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Bulgaria on Ms. Coveschi's efforts to ensure staffing and a budget for the successful functioning of the new European Union body with a decentralized structure and for an active and fruitful partnership in the fight against crimes affecting the financial interests of the Union.
Ms Filipova availed of the opportunity to congratulate Ms Laura Coveschi on the official launch of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, given at a solemn ceremony on 28 September before the Court of Justice of the EU, at which the European Prosecutor General and European prosecutors from the Member States took up their duties. Among them was the Bulgarian representative Ms Teodora Georgieva.
The European Public Prosecutor's Office is an independent body of the European Union entrusted with the investigation, prosecution and bringing to justice the perpetrators of crimes affecting the financial interests of the Union. It is organized at the central and decentralized level. The central level consists of a central office at the seat of the European Public Prosecutor's Office in Luxembourg. The decentralized level consists of European delegated prosecutors established in the Member States. The European Public Prosecutor's Office prosecutes crimes within its jurisdiction and acts as a prosecutor before the competent courts of the Member States.
