Bulgarian prosecutors took part in online workshop related to the mutual recognition of confiscation orders in criminal proceedings

Representatives of the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Bulgaria took part in the First Working Meeting on a project related to the implementation of  Regulation (EU) 2018/1805 on criminal proceedings and the mutual recognition of freezing and confiscation orders.

The workshop was held online and was organized into three panels within which presentations were given and discussion was held. Among the speakers were Professors of criminal law, former and current judges, representatives of Eurojust.

The participants debated on the scope of the concept of "proceedings in criminal matters" and discussed the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in relation to the application of non-conviction based confiscation. Emphasis were laid on the guarantees for a fair trial in this type of criminal proceedings and the scope of precautionary measures in the various European countries.

The 2nd workshop will be held on the harmonisation of the confiscation models in April 2023 at the University of Catania.
