Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev and the Chairperson of the State Agency for National Security signed an order for establishment of a National Interdepartmental Unit in respect to the upcoming elections

The Prosecutor General of the Republic of Bulgaria Ivan Geshev and the Chairperson of the State Agency for National Security Plamen Tonchev signed a joint order regulating the actions of the institutions to guarantee the political rights of citizens, ensuring a quick and adequate response to crimes related to the election process and the lawful conduct of the elections for President and Vice-President and for the National Assembly, scheduled for 14th November 2021. The order establishes a National Interdepartmental Unit, which will coordinate the activities of the Prosecutor’s Оffice of the Republic of Bulgaria and the State Agency for National Security to ensure effective interaction of institutions during the election campaign, on the election day and until the official announcement by the Central Election Commission of the final election results.

Pursuant to the provision of Art. 18, para. 5 of the Electoral Code on 12.10 2021 the  Prosecutor General sent a letter with a proposal for participation in the National Interdepartmental Unit and to the Interim Deputy Prime Minister for Public Order and Security and Minister of Interior Boyko Rashkov, but so far no response has been received.

In order to guarantee the political rights of citizens and to conduct an election process in accordance with the requirements of the law, a duty unit will function in the Supreme Cassation Prosecution Office, which will analyze all incoming signals duty unit related to election violations. In this regard, citizens and organizations can submit signals to the e-mail addresses of the relevant prosecutor's offices in the country, published on the website of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria.

The Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria reiterates its belief that the long-established good practice (which has proved its effectiveness and efficiency) for joint actions of the institutions, in accordance with their statutory powers, contributes to ensuring fair and transparent elections and leads to better interaction and coordination, as expected by Bulgarian citizens and our European partners.
